What is the Bod Pod?
Today we’re talking about something called the Bod Pod. Way back in the times of Ancient Greece, the mathematician Archimedes discovered the principles of water displacement. By using these principles today, we are able to use underwater weighing to determine body composition – but it’s a slow process which isn’t always safe or accessible for everyone, especially children or the elderly. The Bod Pod, on the other hand, takes these same principles and uses air instead of water to measure body composition. It uses a simple equation to convert the density value to an estimated body fat percentage. From this, we can determine a person’s weight of fat, fat-free body mass, and fat-to-lean ratio. The Bod Pod and the seven-site skin fold technique have been found to be reliable by Sacred Heart University and the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital.
